So close, yet a world away, the region called ‘the Jemez’ is one of New Mexico’s best-kept secrets. We have something for everyone, from hiking, camping, skiing, fishing, hunting, horseback riding and biking to soaking in the famous spring-fed mineral hot springs. There is an abundance of wildlife, and the vistas are breathtaking, inspiring writers and artists of all mediums.
Your journey starts on one of America’s most scenic highways, the Jemez Mountain Trail (NM Highway 4). This magical road takes you through spectacular red-rock canyons, past the Native American Jemez Pueblo, and through the resort village of Jemez Springs with soothing, mineralized hot springs.
North of the village, the highway winds upward more into the mountain pine forest, passing geological wonders like the Soda Dam and Battleship Rock, archeological treasures like Jemez State Monument and Bandelier National Monument. The highlight is the nation’s newest national preserve, the vast, volcanic Valle Grande. |
